Weekly report -- 6/25/2011

I'm excited to start blogging about progress on The Visible Closet! There's a lot of stuff to report on in the past week (previous to this week I was too busy with Kellogg graduation activities to get much done, though I was able to secure beta users and storage space for their things). This week the following was accomplished:

  • Incorporated in Delaware
  • Filed articles for doing business in Illinois (waiting for Illinois to process that paperwork)
  • Visited with my friends at Sleevecandy to learn about their operations and gain insights based on their experience
  • Set up email for thevisiblecloset.com -- you can now reach me at dave@thevisiblecloset.com
  • Completed basic layout of thevisiblecloset.com to get going -- this will be the temporary layout until I can get branding activities complete. Note that this layout is not yet live on the site -- the site will not be live until it is well-formatted, functional, and tested.
  • Completed user login functionality. On the test site, it is now possible to sign up for an account and be properly validated. This will allow beta testers to access the site when it is sufficiently ready.
  • Reached out to design firms to get quotes on design, branding, and development work. Still waiting on a few more quotes. Once those are in I will make my decision and get moving on brand development.
  • Attended a session on search engine optimization in preparation for when I will need it
  • Met with a friend who works at Peapod to learn about their operations and boxes
  • Secured space in an incubator so I can have someplace besides home to do work and receive mail
  • Did a lot of research on mass picture uploading. This is actually trickier than it sounds, as there is no accommodation in rails, CSS, HTML, or Javascript for uploading multiple image files, and it's critical for the site that we be able to process many image files at once. Finally landed on a Flash solution for this. I'm currently working on implementing that Flash solution, along with the full back-end model and workflow to support it (most of the model and workflow is done). Once that is done and working all I have to do is set roles and permissions for users and the site will be publishable to the beta testers!

Whew! Busy week. Looking forward to all the exciting things that will happen next week!

  1. Isn't Illinois a horrible state in which to do business online? Like... the worst state there is?

  2. I don't know about the worst state, but it's not good. My lawyer strongly encouraged me to go with Delaware.

  3. I should clarify my post for those who don't know the nature of the biz ... it's clicks and bricks, and getting the bricks out of Illinois at this point is not really an option; thus the DBA in IL.

  4. I suppose I have no idea really what you're doing -- are you generally selling to people in Illinois anyway?

Oh -- and I should mention I hate your comment registration system :) -- Brian W

  5. Hmm, Brian W, Brian W ... I know a lot of those, but frosthelm sounds familiar. Is this Brian Wood?

Blame blogspot for the comment registration system. :-/

  6. Yup, Brian Wood. But we get to blame you for using Blogspot instead of Wordpress, right?

  7. Hey Brian. Yes, I have wanted to move to Wordpress for a while, and just didn't get around to it. I recently searched their templates and found much awesomeness, which increases my desire to make the switch. Not on the top of my priority list, but it's moving up there! :)

To address your question re: the nature of the biz, it's in stealth mode for now (i.e. don't want to post on a public forum), but suffice it to say I have offline operations in Illinois and am serving customers throughout the lower 48. If you're interested in learning more I'll msg you on Facebook!
